Ensure all surfaces to be varnished are sound, clean, dry and free from dust, grease, polish or any other surface contaminant. Remove any flaking or cracked varnish. Previously varnished surfaces in sound condition should be rubbed down with fine waterproof abrasive paper and rinsed thoroughly to provide a key. Avoid the inhalation of dust. Wear a suitable face mask if dry sanding. For best results, new or bare wood should be lightly rubbed down along the grain with fine abrasive paper, any knots sealed with a clear knotting solution, treated with a suitable clear wood preservative and allowed to dry. Special precaution should be taken during surface preparation of pre 1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead.
